Following on from successfully booting to Slax from a usb stick I thought it
would be useful to boot to slackware on an external USB hard drive. Using
lilo on this disk has brought up a number of geometry issues. The boot
floppy I created during install (sata.i) kernel panicks as it can't find
the root parition to mount it.

Any thoughts? From its behaviour it appears that sata.i has usb support
biult in so I am puzzled to the lack of sucess with the floppy. Any
thoughts? Anyone booted slack sucessfully from a USB external drive? The
install cd appeared to work however.

Hmm, it appears it has not, though I suspect that that is not the only
problem.

A two-stage boot allows you to load the USB modules needed. See below.

OK, if USB support is really built in, then I'm puzzled too.

Pete,

There have been previous posts to this news group about booting a USB
hard drive, but you've done some new things. I suggest that you search
for previous posts on the subject. Maybe they'll help, or maybe not.
You can also find some information on my web site

http://josephrosevear.com/rs

about how I made boot disks to boot USB devices using Slack 10.0. I
can boot partitions that have slack installed to them whether they be
on an installed hard drive, a USB hard drive, or a USB flash drive. I
don't use lilo. I use a two-stage grub boot. Everything I need for
the boot and the first stage goes on the CD. There are limitations, so
the disk needs to be made to match your needs.

Yes, it is a big hurdle to figure out how to make these boot disks, but
once you are over the hurdle (or get some help), then it is (has been
for me, anyway) a useful tool. I can use the same boot disk for
booting various USB devices.

I have recently extended my method a bit, so I need to update the
information on my web site. And I have made a boot disk for Slack
10.2.
