Pidgin
version 2.5.1
Multi-protocol Instant Messaging client

Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is an instant messaging program for Windows, Linux, BSD, and other Unixes. You can talk to your friends using AIM, ICQ, Jabber/XMPP, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, IRC, Novell GroupWise Messenger, QQ, Lotus Sametime, SILC, SIMPLE, Zephyr, and MySpace IM.

Pidgin can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AIM, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time.

This package also includes Finch, a console-based (non-GUI) IM client with similar functionality.

Depencency Notes:

  • This Pidgin was compiled with GTKSpell support to provide spell-checking functionality, so it depends on GTKSpell (available from linuxpackages.net) and aspell (comes with Slackware 11.0).
  • The Sametime and SILC protocols require the 'meanwhile' and 'silc-toolkit' packages, respectively, to function.
  • In order to use MSN and Google Talk, Pidgin requires a compatible Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) library. This package was compiled with support for both GnuTLS and the NSS/NSPR libraries included in Mozilla programs. The SSL-NNS plugin in this package was compiled to look for the NSS/NSPR libraries in /usr/lib/seamonkey, /usr/lib/firefox and /usr/lib/thunderbird as well as the regular /usr/lib. This means that, if you have either GnuTLS (plus its dependencies libgcrypt and libgpg-error; all three are available here at LinuxPackages.net) or the official Slackware 11.0 package of any Mozilla application installed, it should 'just work'. (If both are installed, GnuTLS is used -- I think.)
  • To see the exact package dependencies, please click the 'View Contents' link or examine the install/slack-required and install/slack-suggests files within the package.
